The primary objective of NBE is to elevate the levels and establish standards of postgraduate examinations in modern medicine on a nationwide basis by establishing the National Board of Examinations for Medical Sciences. Currently, the country has 149 recognized medical schools. In addition to the Postgraduate teaching institutions accredited by MCI, there are 450 institutions that offer postgraduate training in various Broad and Super Specialties. At present, the Board awards Diplomate of National Board status in 54 disciplines that have been approved by the Board. There has been a standardization of postgraduate exams by the Medical Council of India, but the standards vary considerably between institutions and medical colleges affiliated to universities. By setting up a National Body to conduct postgraduate medical examinations, a uniform standard and evaluation methodology were introduced to provide a means of determining if postgraduate courses are achieving the objective for which they were set up. With the availability of commonly accepted mechanisms for evaluating health, intra-country comparison and international comparison can be facilitated.
DNB Qualifications Recognition
Nomenclature of the NBE Medical Sciences degree is “Diplomates of the National Board”. According to Annexure II of the IMC Act 1956, the Board awards recognition in various Broad and Superspecialties in accordance with the approved list of qualifications approved by the Government of India. By way of notifications issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, National Board of Examinations for Medical Sciences diplomas have been equated with postgraduate and postdoctoral degrees from other Indian Universities (Annexure III). Board qualified people awarded after completing an examination (DNB Final) are eligible for specialist posts in any type of hospital, training or teaching institution. In this regard, please refer to the Government of India’s gazette notification dated the 20th February 2009.
